Naval Fighting Ships
An eight volume set of encyclopedias published by the
Navy History Div., U.S. Govt. Printing Office
The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships is a directory and history of almost every ship commissioned by the U.S. NAVY. It is a very interesting publication. There are photographs, paintings and drawings of many of the ships listed. This set of volumes will be found in the Government Document Section of any major library. Also, every university must have a Government Document Section in order to be certified for "university" status.
Check on these most interesting volumes at your favorite library. Many hours of extremely interesting reading await you. Here you will find detailed ship reports of the most important and historic battles from the Revolutionary War to the present. The sea battles and invasions of World War II are most graphically told.
Volume VII has a special section of TANK LANDING SHIPS. Here is a complete list in numerical order of all LSTs with a brief history of each one. This list also includes the LSTs that were transferred to the Royal Navy and those that were converted to other types. This WWII class of Landing Ship-Tank is the largest class of ships ever built by the Navy and the largest to be in commission at the same time.
